Day 9: Friday, January 19, 2024
Evening hours are approaching here at the cafe. I looked at the menu. A new menu is posted. People come and go. The chatter and conversations linger. The atmosphere is so vibrant and welcoming.
Today, I sit with an old friend, who wanted to join me at the cafe. She is slender and tall with long black hair. Her blue eyes sparkled. Her skin is so pale and white as though she hasn’t been in the sunlight this winter. Her attire was very chic. She wore black flare pants and a dark red sweater with a knotted scarf wrapped around her neck. Her shoes were stylish black loafers.
Our conversation was lengthy. Time flew by. We spoke about the happenings in our lives. We shared stories old and new. We talked about everything and anything that came to our minds. She is a friend near and dear to me.
She complimented me every time I had good news to share. She empathized with me, when I spoke about some challenging issues. She criticized my doings that were uncertain, but in a cautious manner that made me learn from her words of wisdom.
The background rock music played softly. The people sitting around my friend and me at their own table, doing their own thing, and minding their own business distracted us.Our conversation turned to what was going on in the cafe. There was no bad news reported on our phones but the mood in the cafe changed.
The vibes in the room moved my attention to the newly posted menu and I ordered a mango iced tea which was sweet and fruity flavored. I sipped the tea one sip at a time. I liked the tea for a change. My friend chose a mocha cappuccino that she described to me as chocolatey with the burnt coffee flavor. She said the cappuccino was so delicious. She loved her drink. We toasted one another and our friendship. Our words complimented each other. When the night ended, we said our goodbyes. “See you soon my friend,” we said to one another and I hugged her good night.
Anyone can make up their own choices from a menu because we are used to doing that. In our conversations, we tend to use words to not only communicate but to influence others to make choices.
One’s point of view can make an impact on an individual. Whether the words are positive or negative can affect the individual and the situation. There are situations that may arise in a job, school, friendship whatever it may be. If rejection or negative feedback occurs, the effect can be so harsh. Many people have a difficult time when they are put down rejected and or criticized.
If I face a situation that is not comfortable, I don’t face the circumstance straight on. I avoid conflict. If I am in an environment that is positive and uplifting and treated well, I thrive. Positive feedback allows me to be motivated and be productive.
On the contrary, criticism is also welcome. How will I grow without knowing what to improve on? Negative feedback has its place.
There needs to be a healthy balance of the words one gives another. Remarks can go a long way. We can be our own critic. Being judged by others can give insight on how to improve ourselves too.
I like…I don’t like…I love…I hate…I care…It’s scary…It’s upsetting…
These reactions from others show me how I am doing. Again, how am I going to improve? Even the fewest words positive or negative can go a long way.
Be kind. Be considerate. Be honest with those you encounter.
You can choose whatever words to come out of you and you can be as specific as you want to be. But, be tactful. Be careful with your words, your reactions and your remarks.
Make your choice.
